Writing Matildas

For the past month, all of #mannschool has been working on the school wide writing prompt, "If I lived in....".  We were assigned the continent of Australia.  The following happened because of a simple prompt:
  • read nonfiction books to learn about the continent and its people, places, and landmarks.
  • collectively researched things online that were interesting to us.
  • used Google Earth on our iPads to help us tour through the main attractions of the continent.
  • organized our thoughts and findings onto a note organizer.
  • interviewed two Australians on Skype, getting a window into the daily Australian life.
  • wrote one (or two) rough drafts and made corrections.
  • wrote a final draft using a pen!
  • made a fun way to present our writing.
Take a look! (once again, if you are on a tablet please click here for the gallery)

And just in case you're keeping a Common Core tally at home:
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.6 Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.10 With prompting and support, read informational texts appropriately complex for grade 1.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.5 With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
  • CCSS.SocialStudies.SS.1.9.19.399  Oh wait.  There are no Common Core standards for Social Studies in 1st grade.  Hmmm....
